Ritually speaking today the 8th of July counts to a ceremony named
Hera Panchami that equates the stature of Lord Jagannath and his
consort to almost the human level. It’s a definite worth watching as
it involves an exciting family drama of Lord Jagannath and Goddess
Laxmi.
Lord Jagannatha left his wife Lakshmi, and went to Gundicha mandir
promising to return the next day. When he does not return the next
day, Goddess Laxmi. gets angry for being left out at the temple and
angrily sets out in night on a paliquin to aunt Gundicha temple to
meet her husband Lord Jagannath but she doesn’t enter the temple as
her husband’s ender brother Lord Balabhadra is next to Lord Jagannath.
She remains in the courtyard only.
After having a stealthy look at her Lord, she returns to the temple,
damaging a part of Rath in anger and disgust. When the goddess
arrives, her servitors - the devidasis confront the head dayita and
sing the Hera Panchami song (Hera means to 'see' and Panchami means
'the fifth day') pulling at the dayita's dhoti. The Hera Panchami song
expresses Lakshmi's anger. One of the devidasis then brakes a piece of
the Lord's chariot.
