Utkala Dibasa Special - Enemies of Orissa

Jaya Jagannath,                                            ( A Special article, on behalf of 73rd Utkala Dibasa )

Some one says : Enemies make you stronger, allies make you weaker. The most worthy piece of example to justify this sentence is non other than the bitter history of Orissa. A rich and prosperous golden kingdom of pride prestigious and happily living peace loving people was crushed under the time wheel and ruined by external attackers. The prosperity that we witness today in Orissa could have been many folds if it would not have faced the darkest days of it's disaster caused in past.

Enemies of Orissa ( A chronological recap ) :

Kala Pahad : A General of Bengal Governor Suleiman Kirrani, named Kalachand Roy or Kala Pahad fell in love with the daughter of kirrani and got married on the condition that he converted to Islam. But repentance came who wanted to come back to Hinduism. For this he came to Puri to convert himself again to Hinduism-but the orthodox pandas of Puri Jagannath temple refused him to accept as Hindu In tune with the dictates of this new faith, he now believed that idol worship was a heathen activity, and went about destroying all Hindu idols in the region and embraced the new faith with the passion of the convert.

He invaded Orissa in 1568 and marched up to Puri. Kaala Pahaad wanted to burn the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, and in one of his attacks on the temple at Puri he did succeed in wrenching the idols from the temple. He threw the idols unceremoniously on the street and kicked them around a bit before carting them all the way to the banks of Hooghly and set fire to them. However, the ’brahmapinda’ or the core saligram stone (considered a sacred stone that is alive) had been removed from the idols beforehand by the priests who had anticipated the attack and had been hidden at Sonpur. When the priests of Lingaraj temple at Bhubaneswar apprehended his attack they filled the sanctum sanctorum with husk. Kala Pahad tried his best to take it out, but in the end set fire to the dump. After he left, the priests put the fire out, but by then the sivalingam had cracked and been disfigured.

Charan Patnaik : During 1817 the British attacked Khurda Dynasty and the Fort of Raja on the foot of Barunei hills was stomed and razed to the ground “Khordha” is the last freedom fort of India to come under the British rule. The British followed a new revenue system which infuriated the “Paikas” (the warriors) who enjoyed the land in lieu of their services were asked to pay rent and taxes at the same rate as cultivators. At the same time the British also introduced salt monopoly which give birth the Paika Bidroha , guerilla Paika fighters of Orissa fought and stopped British invasion further inside Orissa. Britishers planned a strategy to look for local informers who can inform them about the hide outs and strategies of native patriot Guerilla fighters. A local person named Charan Patnaik pinned Britishers about hide outs of freedom fighters of Orissa and thus britishers could storm the hideout and killed patriotic gladiators of Orissa Buxi Jagabandhu, Madhab Ch. Routray, Dal Behera, Krutibas Pattasani, Pindiki Bahubalendra. Thus the Paika Bidroh (Rebellion), the last hope for an independent Orissa was completely stamped out in September, 1818.

The failure of Paika Bidroh was due to betray by Charan Pattnaik, Mdhhu Pattnaik, Dhrubajaya Harichandan(betray Pindiki Bahubalendra), Ogal Singh, Bhagabar Jagadev Biraban. In return these informers turncoat traitors had got a land in reward back from Britishers. Till today this land property for which they are not paying tax is being recognized by people as Beiman Nimak Haram Jagiri.

Moghuls / Britishers : Blown with their passion of ruling the world, they had attacked the complete length and breadth of the world. They repeatedly tried invading inside the Kalinga Dynasty during 17th till 18th Century but were unable to win over the extreme spirit and tremendous fighting skills under guerilla warfare techniques of Tribal fighters of Orissa. Powerful and great kings like Aira Kharvela, Bhaumkaras, Somvanshis, Sailodbhav and Gangas had fought and preserved the pride of Orissa. Kalinga had a full fledged Naval Contingent commercially influencing the eastern hemisphere. Maharaja Langula Narasingha Dev and kings of Ganga Vansha had pushed the Moghul invaders and kept them behind Dhaka.

King Ashoka : Although Kalinga war is considered as a spiritual and mythological  turning point in Indian History, but still for Orissa it's a bitter memory of brutal failure with a cost of war casualty of lakhs of fellow Kalinga Soldiers. Kalinga War being the greatest wars fought in the history of man-kind. For Causing such a massive loss to both life and livelihood of our motherland Orissa, King Ashok can't be spared being called an Enemy of our motherland Orissa.

Present Day Enemies : What ever others could not impact, more than that was even caused due to our own people who were in power till the end of 20th century. Improper administration and undisciplined & corrupted rulers have injured Orissa since it's independence till the onset of 21st century.

  1. Orissa has ever been treated like an orphan step son of central government because of the insufficient governance at the state and ignorant and non intellectual MPs representing us at the centre, We lost 50 golden years. The sharp edge injuries of political negligence, improper planning and lack of intelligent MPs at centre has certainly manhandled Orissa for 50 years. Please click here to find the shocking truths behind how Our motherland was looted after it's independence for 50 years. Please read the detailed mail here.
  2. Shivraj Patil : He came for an aerial survey well after the flood had almost finished everything in Orissa. Responding to the state Govt. plea for 1000 crore as central help, he promised for just 500 crore while leaving Bhubaneswar Airport and after reaching New Delhi he forgot that too. Just threw a coin in return. ( Simultaneously : During Bihar floods apart from forcefully snatching 3 day salaries of all salaried central Govt. employees across India, Lalu Yadav also demanded 1500 crores and Central Govt. home minister Shivraj Patil instantly released 1500 crores with a cute smile, of course May be reason being lalu parts with him at the central Govt those days). 3. Sibu Soren : Recently Shibu Soren of Jharkhand started blackmailing UPA Govt. to merge three districts Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundergarh from Orissa with Jharkhand to form greater Jharkhand state, else threatened that he along with his handful of JMM MPs will not vote in favor of Sri. Manmohan Singh during trust vote. To be noted that Orissa had been demanding the merger of Sareikala and Kharsuan, the two areas originally belonging to Orissa that has been snatched by them since the formation of our state in 1930s. Please click here for details.
  4. Christian missionaries : The ones who have spoiled the innocent tribal to naxal. Vedanta Kesari Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati ( a supreme saint who was of Sri. Adi Sankaracharya cadre ) was killed at point blank range at his ashram at Jalespata, Kandhamal district, while performing Janmastami prayers. 22 bullets of AK 47 along with a note to suffer if prevent Hindus from converting to Christianity , that stole the lives of him along with five of his colleagues. His extraordinary efforts had caused lakhs of converted Christian tribals to return to the Hindu fold. He was actively involved in the protection of tribal dharma from aggressive Christian evangelists in the state's tribal belt since 1966. A man who had in a very noble and saintly fashion raised the downtrodden and long forgotten populace of Kandhamal from ignominy to a state of recognition, pride, and self-sufficiency. He had constructed ten Sri Jagannath Temples at Kandhamal district and was even organizing massive Rath Yatra there too. A brief about his life style and a shocking detail about Christian Aggression in India
  5. Protestors of Development : Fellow Innocent country people are being continuously spoiled by antigovernment elements to ruin any new progress in the lines of development. Any new proposals of either a steel plant, a port, an airport, a dam, a power plant or even a small road construction project is being responded by local villagers with stiff opposition, even armed revolution in many cases. This is not only ridiculous, but as citizens of Orissa, it is quite shameful for all of us. Just imagine POSCO investing 12000 crores shall no doubt gift Orissa a modern township ten times larger, smarter and efficient than Rourkela, Tata Iron & Steel Co. Ltd at Jajpur with 15,000 Crores, Sterlite Iron & Steel Co. Ltd at Keonjhar with 12,500 Crores, Jindal at Keonjhar with 4,000 Crores, Tube at Kalinga Nagar with 3,480 Crores will shape our state on the templates of Germany and Japan. Along with this in addition we will get seven world class seaports, International Airports, World class educational institutions, Mega power plants, World class railway stations, All employed youth force, A completely developed world s richest state in return, a rich, safe, wealthy heaven just in few years. Think of any steel township on earth. A mere jungle a day once converted into a steel city, not only provides enormous job opportunities to lakhs of people instantly, but also gifts a well planned, sophisticated, multi billion state of the art township with all facilities intact, a promised future for generations further for all in and around the steel city. So why there is an opposition for such major industrial project movements in Orissa. At one side millions of talented Oriya youth leave their homes for distant parts of the country in search of job and livelihood and on other side people back home at Orissa resist industries to enter Orissa, atack on them when they come for land survey, kidnap their officials and torture them. How disgusting is this? Why are we all keeping quite? It s not only the responsibility of the administration to look into this, rather it's the responsibility of each and evey Odia around the world to facilitate smooth investments in Orissa in terms of industrialization, modernization and financial development. We do this today and we stay alive in the growing world tomorrow. We sleep today and tomorrow the rest of the world will cruise ahead crushing us behind.
  6. Few Lower class Govt. Employees : At times Our motherland had seen worst days of nature's fury like Super cyclone, drought, Sunami, floods and even remotely controlled religious violence. Apart from the rest of the world, many non residential Odia people from all over the world came forward to help the innocent people, but during this bad times, few low line government employees tried to maintain their conventional tricks of corruption, thus pushing many people into the jaws of death. Some People even remained reluctant and matter less, thus neither responded nor reacted to this and let our motherland left bleeding. Do you believe our motherland would still certify them as proud sons of her. Shame on them. Recently giant river Mahanadi along with all branch rivers came up flushing their banks causing a major natural calamity to Costal Orissa, but later Seeing the extent of ignorance of the central government, depth of partiality in responding to floods of Bihar and that of Orissa, volume of step motherhood attitude, bureaucracy, camouflaged politics, crocodile cries( Kumvira Kandana ) of authorities, ignorance and reluctance of even relatives, family members and even offsprings of the affected people, at last the aggressive rivers felt pity, sympathy and recede back leaving behind clusters of memories, lessons. Water left cleaning behind the naked truth of extent of belongingness of officials for the people.
We wish lord Jagannath protect our state from all the evil eyes and smoothen the paths of development. Long live our motherland, long live it's pride and heritage, long live our culture, long live it's self respect. Bande Utkala Janani. Jaya Jagannath.
