Jaya
Jagannath,
Many of us would have different facts and files of the
mystery behind distinctive appearance of lord Jagannath. The mystery
floats within legends based on Puranas and Folklores scripted by
eminent writers and poets at one hand and on the other hand the
statements of the scholars who have tried to collate evidences from
known history, archeological evidences and ancient literatures to
draw surmises.
Upon invitation from King Indradyumna, Lord Vishnu in disguise of an
old Carpenter agreed to design the triad deities, but on the
condition that he should be left undisturbed till finish, But just after a
fortnight the queen grew impatience over no sound from the room and
thus the king broke open the room. Lord Viswakarma got angry and left the idols
unfinished. Thus the deities had unfinished avatar. Later King Indradyumna prayed lord Brahma who gave the idols
eyes, soul and also acted as the highest priest in the consecration.
The second reason of lord’s distinctive appearance goes as follows.
This is the story of how Krishna was eavesdropping on the gopis as
they spoke amongst themselves of His pastimes, and how much they
loved him. Sister Subhadra was instructed to keep watch and ensure
Krishna wasn't nearby while the gopis spoke of Krishna. But after a
while Subhadra was so overwhelmed by the gopis' devotion and their
stories that she became completely engrossed in listening. She
didn't see the brothers Krishna and Balarama approaching. As the
brothers listened their hairs stood on end, their arms retracted,
their eyes grew larger and larger, and they smiled broadly in
ecstasy. That is why Jagannath, Balarama and Subhadra look like they
do. What so ever
it may be, but imagine if Lord Jagannath can bless so much to all his devotees
with just half hand, then Imagine how much he can grace and bless if he would be having complete hands. Jaya Jagannath.
