Kumar Purnami :
On setting Autumn the month of Aswina in oriya calendar starts flying high with festivals, carnivals and celebrations. Today counts to Kumar Purnima, a festival is celebrated in respect of Goddes Lakshmi, the divinity of prosperity. Today two sets of priests, one in lieu of Lord Jagannath and other Goddess Laxmi play dice on this festival. Nevertheless, this satisfies the Lords. Today is the full-moon day in the month of October. This autumn festival is one of the most popular and important festival of Orissa. 'Kumar' the handsome Son of Lord Shiva was born on this day. He also became the 'God of war'.

Today the young girls who wish for a handsome husband, propitiate Lord Kumar who was considered to be the most handsome among the Gods. In the early morning young girls after their purificatory bath wear new garments and make food-offerings to the Sun. They observe fasting for the day. In the evening when the moon rises they again make food offerings of a special variety and take it after the rituals are over. It is a festival of rejoicing for the girls. They sing and dance. The songs are of special nature. They also play a kind of country game known as 'Puchi'.

Gajalaxmi Puja :
This day is also observed as the birthday of Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth. People worship the Goddess at their homes and keep themselves indulged and awaken by playing Pasha (Chess). Significantly it suggests that those who wish to acquire wealth should always be vigilant at night. It is for this reason the owl, a bird that sleeps in the day and awakes only at night is considered to be dearest to goddess Laxmi.
