sub : Performance in IT industry, Orissa Vs our neighbouring state candidates

Date : Jun 11, 2008 8:11 PM

Jai Jagannath,

In most of the off-campus/ walk-in event we keep on saying people from Orissa are too poor on communication skill, soft skills and they will hardly get the job while competing with others. Here is an eye opener on how people who have degree/masters from Orissa are performing. In the below mail, We have taken example of two states. One which is known for density of educational institutes and one known for the density of the skills in performance. To do an analysis on how our people are performing in Hiring events, We have taken the above two states educational systems into consideration. We have no intentions and hard feeling to any of the state, and We respect them for their governance. But when it comes to a matter Orissa, yes We become a bit selfish and We believe it happens with everyone. In the below mail, We have referred to Oriya graduates/masters which refers to people who have their last qualification from Orissa (irrespective of Origin/caste/..etc) and referring to graduates/masters from Our neighbouring staterefers to people who have their last qualification from AP. To compare our people's performance We have taken Our neighbouring stateinto final consideration as We believe we can find the density of people from Our neighbouring stateis much higher than that of other states. While doing a data mining on last few years recruitment events in Bangalore/Hyderabad/Chennai, We found that the ratio of candidates passed out of Orissa to that of candidates from Our neighbouring stateare eye raising factor. We always keep on saying our people are weak in communication, they will hardly crack it. But our observation has revealed that the ratio of oriya candidates selected to that of appeared is far better than others. To compare our people's potential We have taken Our neighbouring stateinto account as We have seen their density is high in the software industry.

A few facts:

- > No. of Engg. Colleges in AP:200+ (http://www.thehindu.com/2006/02/16/stories/2006021620720500.htm) Its much higher(263) than what We are calculating too!
- > Avg. student intake per college: 400
- > Total no. of pass-out students: approx 75000 every year
- > No. of freshers coming to software industry (to search): approx 20000 (as some gets thru campus and some goes for higher educations)
- > Density of Our neighbouring statestudents in every 100 recruited candidates = approx 15-20
- > Avg %age of pass-out graduates/masters=approx 80%

Now let's look to candidates who are getting passed out of Orissa

- > No. of engg. Colleges: 40+
- > Avg. student intake per college:350
- > Total no. of pass-out students: approx 14000
- > No. of freshers coming to software industry (to search): approx 5000 (Rest includes campus selected/ students interested in higher studies)
- > Density of Oriyas in every 100 recruited candidates=approx 8-10
- > Avg %age of pass-out graduates/masters=65-75%

From the above figure you can observe that per year 20000 pass-outs from Our neighbouring stateare landing in the software market compared to that of 5000 oriyas in the market. If you will consider the final selected candidates then obviously candidates from Orissa are performing better than that of Our neighbouring statepass-outs. Please note that more number of Our neighbouring statecandidates gets short listed due to higher percentages also.

For better numerology, In every mass hiring event:
1. While short listing, more numbers of pass-outs from Our neighbouring stategets shortlisted due to higher percentages compared to that of candidates passed out from Orissa.
2. While offering the job, assume that 100 fresh candidates are selected in a mass hiring event, and then following datas will show you how candidates passed-out of Orissa are performing:

Assuming the lower boundaries [8-10] for candidates from Orissa: 8 Oriya candidates get selected (out of 5000), which is 0.16% of the total Oriya freshers (freshers who pass out from Orissa).
Assuming the higher boundaries [15-20] for candidates from AP: 20 Our neighbouring statecandidates get selected (out of 20000), which is 0.10% of the total Our neighbouring statecandidates (freshers passed-out of AP).
From the above fact, just imagine even if we are comparing our lower boundaries against the upper boundaries of the other passed-out candidates, still then our %age of selection is higher. Sounds good…..So, imagine which is impressive 0.10% or 0.16%?

So, we can say that overall Oriya candidates are performing better than other candidates. But a basic problem lies in the approach we people are taking while helping in the absorption of Oriya candidates (passed out from Orissa) in the industry. To say, honestly Orissa still remains as a second thought for the companies to go for a recruitment drive. But if we will see the overall performance of our pass-outs we are far ahead of others in performance. We agree that our people are weak in communication skills, but it's a problem with everyone. Its not region bounded now.

There is one factor in which we are lagging behind other people. Yes its helping hands. To cite We will just say the groupism in people from Our neighbouring stateVs that of grads/masters from Orissa. We believe many of us must have seen, where ever people from Our neighbouring stategoes they goes in a group or community, the same is never with us. In the same way people who are from Our neighbouring stateand working groom their friends and help them in getting job. In this case the helping hands are denser. Now take the example of people who are from Orissa. We believe in our own lives and hardly bother about mentoring or guiding the aspirants. We point fingers but never look toward our innerself. We look for the shortest path ( how to skip written test) but never look for the toughest path where success is guaranteed. We appreciate but hesitate to get involved. Guys!! It's a wake call and time to revamp our bondings.

Going in a different dimension, we are thinking of few things to improve the throughput of all our pass-out candidates and We believe we will get extended hands from your end too! Below are few suggestions We would like to transform into actions in next few months.

1) Lets urge to all the colleges to make communication skill as the necessary part of the subject(We will try to approach BPUT). As per my knowledge in our courses there is a subject on enhancing communication skills till 2nd sems and after that no one utilizes that. It should be a continuous subject throughout all the semesters to mould every candidate. Apart from BPUT we will approach different Universities(offering Masters) also as well as some renowned institutes.

2) Lets arrange communication skills classes (area wise e.g Marathahalli,BTM,Jayanagar in Bangalore) where we will encourage people on how to speak proper English. It will be a phonetic guidance with practice session rather than one side delivery.

3) Mean time we will urge colleges to make more off campus events so that all college graduates can participate and get absorbed. It will be similar to any mass hiring event in Bangalore and companies will get better candidates there too! For this all the colleges have to open their hands and team-up.

4) We will appreciate if each and every employee in every company can share the HR contact details with us so that we will keep track of every company's recruitment and growth and then we will approach the to have a look on Orissa to gulp some candidates. If your company is regularly conducting campus hiring event then we are really thankful to the organization. No need to share the contact details of the HR, if your organization is already engaged in campus hiring event in Orissa.

We know it will not be feasible for everyone to work-on all the points, but We can say that everyone can act upon the last point(4).

Please send a mail to debeesantosh.prakash@logica.com and siba.ram.baral@sap.com, as we will be closely working together in making this feasible. We will be pleased if you can browse your corporate white pages and send us the details ASAP. It will hardly take 2 minutes of your valuable time. But it can definitely help the next two batches coming out of Orissa in a wiser way.

As an action plan We urge everyone to send a mail mentioning Name of the Company and Contact details of the HR (preferably the Head of the recruitment team, landline number-as it will not change)

Additionally, we have observed there are candidates who need to enhance their communication skills. We will shortly communicate a mail describing the venue and timing (preferably after Rath yatra as we will be busy in weekends for the same) where we will be conducting communication skills classes. It will be once/twice in a month and will be in a place where we can accommodate more number of candidates.
I hope we will soon bring those days when the preferred destination for hiring event of the companies will be in Orissa. We look forward to your co-operation.
