Last Saturday’s repeat beating coronary bypass surgery
of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has added a new dimension to
global face value of eminent pioneering personalities of Orissa.
Pride son of our motherland, Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Ramakanta
Madan Mohan Panda ( CEO and Head, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Asian
Heart Institute, Mumbai ) has successfully led a team of 11 doctors
from both AHI and AIIMS, conducting an 8 hour long coronary artery
bypass graft on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Thus as a man of
pride to Orissa, we got our first nominee for Priya Odia 2009
campaign. His hall of fame with success score of more than 6000
high-risk heart surgeries boosted him to operate the most
high-profile personality of the country. His honesty, a doctor who
has waived fees for hundreds of economically unfortunate patients,
is also involved in many charities across Orissa.

Achievements :
1. One of the best Cardiac Surgeons in the country, he
has performed over 6000 open-heart surgeries.
2. He is one of the pioneering cardiac surgeons in India in use of
arterial conducts for bypass grafting, Redo coronary artery bypass
grafting, severely damaged hearts and cardiac remodeling.
3. He performs more than 99% bypass surgeries by beating heart
technique and most bypass surgeries using arterial conduits only,
which is far superior to conventional use of vein grafts from leg.
4. He has one of the safest records in the world with a mortality of
less than 0.5% in isolated coronary bypass surgeries for last 5
years.
Education & Services :
1. Received cardiac surgery training from the All India
Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
2. Did Fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic, USA
3. Dr. Panda has also worked for one year as Sr. Registrar at the
Harefield Hospital, in the United Kingdom, where he had the
opportunity to train under Professor Magdi Yacoub, considered to be
one of the foremost cardiac surgeons in the world.
4. Over the past thirteen years, he has been a consultant
cardiovascular surgeon and has operated in most major Mumbai
hospitals, including Jaslok Hospital, Breach Candy Hospital,
Lilavati Hospital, and Nanavati Hospital.
Credentials :
Dr. Panda has been awarded the prestigious Rashtriya
Samman for being one of the highest taxpayers during the assessment
years 1994-95 to 1998-99, by the Central Board of Taxes, Government
of India.
Pioneer :
Dr. Panda is credited and recognized amongst his peers as
being among the first surgeons in the country to introduce the
concept of ‘total arterial revascularization’, as well as being one
of the pioneers of “off-pump” bypass surgery, Redo bypass surgery,
Operating on high risk patients and so on.
Under his leadership, his surgical team has performed in excess of
10,000 bypass surgeries, making him one of the highest-volume
surgeons in the world. He is also credited with performing more than
700 repeat (redo) bypass surgeries, as well as more than 1500 high
risk surgeries These surgeries have offered a new lease of life to
many patients considered ‘inoperable’.
Social Responsibility Initiatives
:
Dr. Panda has helped hundreds of economically handicapped
patients by waiving off his professional fees for surgery, as well
as setting up the Asian Heart Charitable Trust to help patients. In
his home state, Orissa, Dr. Panda has set up the Sarla Madan
Charitable trust, which does charitable work.
His gift to Orissa :
Orissa is being gifted with a modern state of the art multi specialty
Asian Heart Institute cum hospital at Chandrasekharpur on an
area of 1,50,000 square feet, a Rs 150 crores worth 300 beds, 12 ultra modern operations theatres, 100 intensive care
units, fully equipped modernized pathology services, round-the-clock
emergency services serving with radiology, imaging services, blood
bank, 24hours pharmacy services and cardiac ambulance services with
mobile cathlab. The Hospital will provide treatment to various
medical specialties such as cardiology, cardio thoracic surgery,
orthopedics, urology, endocrinology, dental, dermatology,
diabetology, gastroenterology, ENT, geriatrics, hematology,
neonatology, nephrology, neurology, obstetrics, gynecology
