Rath Yatra during earliest days : An amazing little known fact

Jaya Jagannath,

A little known fact : During the earliest days (during thirteenth century ), Rath Yatra at Puri was happening in three phases each side ( Onward and return journey ). A river named Malini was flowing across the Bada Danda dividing it into two sections. Hence there were 2 pairs of 3 each ( A Total of 6 chariots were constructed for Rath Yatra ). Hard to believe, but true. There were Two chariots of the name Nandighosa, Two Deba Dalana and Two Taladhwaja. This also required Pahandi to happen 4 times on Rath Yatra and 4 times on Bahuda too.

One set of the chariots were ferrying the three Lords from Sri Mandira till River Malini. Then three huge wooden boats were sailing them across the Malini river where another set of Identical chariots were waiting to ferry the lords to Mausi Maa Temple.

King Narasingha Deva had the bridge built at Atharonala or Shankhua River. The queen’s name was Shraddha Devi. She had a bridge built across this river and made the sandy bed of the river suitable for the chariots. The sandy area thus took on the name Shraddha Bali (bAli means sand). The river has long since dried up.
