Mythology :

Ignoring Narada’s warnings, Princess Savitri the pretty daughter of king Aswapati ultimately married to exile Prince Satyaban, who was living in the forest with his blind father Dyumatsen. But Narada forecasted that he would die young. Gradually when the ordained time for the death of Satyaban drew near, his head reeled and he fell down from the tree and then expired on the lap of Savitri. When death God Yamraj came to take the soul away of Satyaban, Savitri pleaded to Yamraj not to be separated from her husband. If at all he would take away the soul of her husband she would also follow. Yamraj was taken aback at such a request and explained that it was impossible. Instead he wanted to grant three boons.

With the first boon she asked that her in-laws be reinstated in their kingdom with full glory. With the second boon she asked for a son for her father. Finally, for the third boon she asked I would like to have children. Yama Raj hurriedly granted the same. Then Savitri said, now that you have granted me the boon of having children please return my husband as I can only have children from him. Soon Yama Raj realized that he had been tricked by Savitri. Yama remained silent for a minute and then smiled and said I appreciate you persistence. But what I liked more was you readiness to marry a man whom you loved even though you knew that he would only live for a year. Go back to your husband he will wake up.

In deep respect to Savitri all Hindu women observe this festival worshiping and propitiating her as a goddess. The morale of the festival is to teach the women to be virtuous devotional and painstaking like Savitri to make worldly life happy and peaceful. On the eve of Sabitri Amavasya Brata, Team Nilachakra Wishes all married sisters a blissful married life ever. Jaya Jagannath.
